Tips & tricks when signing a contract

  • Make sure to bring a proof of residence if you want to purchase a smartphone with your subscription. Some providers need this as an insurance that you are staying in the Netherlands for the duration of the subscription;
  • Do not use your current subscription to make international calls, this is very expensive. Moreover, roaming can still be expensive, especially if you are have a non-European identity. From the 1st of July in 2017 roaming will no longer be charged;
  • The Netherlands has by the far the most WiFi connections in Europe, thus in a lot of public spaces you can easily use a free WiFi-network. This will come in handy if you do not yet have a Dutch mobile phone subscription;
  • However, keep in mind that due to the abundance in WiFi-networks, both free and private ones, using a WiFi-network in public area is not always safe. Therefore, we advise to use your own data connection while making a payment.
  • Calling home can be a costly thing, thus it would be better to use an alternative medium, such as Skype, to call home if you do not have a plan with international calls yet;
  • Another application for calling by use of the Internet is Viber. The application is available for both iOS and Android systems;
  • Keep in mind that when you get a new subscription/plan in the Netherlands, you will always have to pay a one-time administration fee. Everyone has to pay this, thus do not be afraid when charged with this. Sometimes you pay it straightaway in the store or online and sometimes the costs will appear on your first bill. The costs are approximately between 25 and 30 euros.
